The Slovak Republic Again This Year Participated in the International Exercise of NATO Cyber Defence – Cyber Coalition 2018

One of the largest and most comprehensive exercise in the field of NATO cyber defence Cyber Coalition 2018 was held in Estonian Tartu from 27 to 29 November 2018.  This exercise was attended by 28 countries with more than 700 participants. The Slovak Republic is already a regular participant in this exercise and this year it was not different.

The eleventh year of the exercise Cyber Coalition 2018 was focused on different aspects of NATO cyber defence. Participants were training in the workplaces of respective countries and within the exercise scenarios they had to solve various types of tasks. Regarding the technical level it was particularly the analysis of malicious code, forensic analysis and gathering evidences of the attacker’s activities in the network of fictitious NATO mission. Moreover, participants had to solve the operative level of problems, communication with national and international partner organisations, and distribution of early warnings to attacked entities or escalation to a higher management level.

The National Security Authority took part in the exercise at national level and joined several departments and CSIRT units in one team – the National Unit SK-CERT, the Ministry of Defence of the Slovak Republic, the CSIRT Unit of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic for Investments and Informatization and the Police Headquarters of the Slovak Republic. The objective of the exercise was not only to verify the national capabilities and procedures under applicable NATO rules and procedures but also to promote a better coordination and cooperation among respective departments and CSIRT units. 

Cyber Coalition exercise has demonstrated this year again that the training in the field of NATO cyber defence is extremely important in the time of sophisticated and technically advanced attacks. The scenario of the latest exercise was based on current cyber threats and highlighted the need for better cooperation, communication and importance of information sharing at national as well as international level.
